French Polynesia

French Polynesia

Roughly 4,267km off the coast of New Zealand, in the south-central Pacific Ocean, lie a vast cluster of 118 islands known as French Polynesia. French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France that is home to sparkling turquoise water, vast mountain ranges, rich ancestral culture, and an unspoiled, isolated destination for your next vacation.

Located in an isolated part of the Pacific Ocean, the islands and atolls of French Polynesia are divided into five unique archipelagoes, each with its own distinct culture, history, landscape, and traditions. Well-known destinations such as Tahiti and Bora Bora are located within the Society Archipelago, also known as the Society Islands. Other unique travel destinations can be found within the four other archipelagos located in French Polynesia: the Austral,Marquesas, Tuamotu, and Gambier Islands.

French Polynesia has something unique to offer every person who visits its beautiful islands. With so many places to choose from and so many experiences to be had, we have put together a list of some of our favourite trips that will allow you to step foot into the world of French Polynesia.

French Polynesia

Know before you go

  • May–October: Dry season (best weather, higher prices)
  • November–April: Wet season (fewer crowds, better deals, occasional storms)

French Polynesia is made up of 100+ islands, and each has a different vibe:

  • Bora Bora – iconic luxury, overwater bungalows, honeymoon paradise
  • Moorea – lush, adventurous, great for hiking and snorkeling
  • Tahiti – main hub, culture, markets, and nightlife
  • Rangiroa – incredible diving and quieter escape

Pro Tip: Don’t try to see too many islands—2–3 is perfect for a relaxing trip.

  • Polynesian culture is warm, welcoming, and rooted in tradition
  • Dress modestly in towns and villages
  • Learn a few words: “Ia Orana” (hello), “Mauruuru” (thank you)

Pro Tip: Sundays are quiet—many places close or operate limited hours.
